Please help, close friend moved away?

I have a old friend who moved away just last year. when we were little, we were best friends. We were good friends for a while after that, then we slowly drifted apart. When everyone quit a small team that kept us together and brought us memories, we barely saw each other. Later, her mother passed away, and her family was in a bad place. That was about 3 years ago, and now she has moved away. I made a point to see her before she left, and when i hugged her goodbye it was full of many old memories and regrets that we tragically grew apart. I cry just thinking of that. I do not know why, but sometimes i cry a ton over her, it feels to me that she passed away too. Before she left, when i barely saw her, she had gotten really popular and now has 3 or 4 really good best friends. I feel so regretful but also like i could not have stopped the drift. I don't know, how do I try and get back in touch in a non-creepy way? Should I even get back in touch? Plz help
