Can a dog get rabies out of no where? or without being bitten by another animal?

an example of no where would be..like me have a chihuahua and it not getting its rabie shot but then it bites me. yet it has had no exposure of being bitten by anything i.e. another dog, wild animal. hope yu get what i mean.
