What am I missing in the health insurance debate?

Democrats, including some progressive ones, are the biggest defenders of the policy mandating that every American purchase insurance from a private company. I thought progressives were supposed to be against handing such a large amount of power and money to private businesses. Why are Republicans the ones opposing this enormous hand out to big business, and Democrats the ones supporting it?
